There’s a lot of science behind the way food impacts us both physically and mentally. We’ve got foods that boost mood, foods to eat on your period and foods to avoid before bed – all for good reason! But how about foods to enhance your focus on those days you’re suffering from brain fog and fatigue?
Fatty Fish
They’re good for burning fat, and just as good for increasing focus! Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish like salmon, trout and sardines are excellent for brain health. They benefit cognitive function, aiding in memory retention and focus.
Avocados
Another highly praised good fat, avocados are rich in vitamins C, E and K, which all contribute to protecting the brain from oxidative stress, improving memory and focus. Smashed avo on toast really is the ideal breakfast to keep yourself on task and focused until your next meal!
Tea & Coffee
This one probably doesn’t come as a surprise! We all know caffeine is a stimulant which leads to benefits like enhanced alertness. The amount of caffeine in tea or coffee varies depending on the origin, type and how they’re prepared.
Fun fact: Tea leaves contain around 3.5% of caffeine, while coffee beans typically have 1.1-2.2%, but since the coffee brewing process uses hotter water, it extracts more of the caffeine from the beans. We typically use more coffee beans than tea leaves for a standard drink too, so that’s why coffee is the go-to for the mornings.
Wholegrains
Not only are they perfect for keeping you fuller for longer, wholegrains like oats, quinoa and brown rice provide a steady release of energy to the brain. They promote increased focus and concentration.
Blueberries
They are boasted as mood-boosting berries, but they also help us focus! For the same reason they lift our spirits, the antioxidants found in blueberries help improve communication between brain cells to enhance memory and cognitive function.
Incorporate some of these foods into your diet, especially in the morning! You’ll be doing your brain a favour.
