Are You Hungry Or Just Cold?

Share

Noticed you're hungrier than usual lately? Before you put it down to a lack of willpower, it's worth asking: are you actually hungry, or is it just cold?

Winter changes the way your body asks for food. Here's what's really going on, and what to do about it.

Your Body Is Trying To Warm You Up

Eating generates heat, so when your body temperature drops, food is the quickest way to warm back up. It's an old survival instinct: cold weather tells your body to crave more and store energy for the days ahead.

The catch is what you reach for matters. High-sugar, high-fat foods might warm you up for a moment, but the crash that follows leaves you colder and hungrier than before, a cycle that has you eating well beyond what your body actually needs.

Less Sunlight Means Different Cravings

Shorter days mean less sunlight, which affects your vitamin D and serotonin levels. When serotonin dips, carb cravings often follow, and it's often behind that flatter, low-energy feeling winter can bring.

We can't bring back the sun, but regular movement helps: exercise lifts serotonin and dopamine naturally, keeping your mood, and your cravings, on an even keel.

Boredom Looks A Lot Like Hunger

Staying inside more often means more boredom, and boredom is one of the sneakiest weight loss derailers there is. Worth learning to tell the difference between "I'm hungry" and "I'm bored and the pantry's right there." Read our full guide on beating boredom eating here.

Don't Forget Water

Winter also quietly cuts how much you drink. You're not sweating, you don't feel as thirsty, so water intake drops without you noticing, and being under-hydrated can leave you feeling low and out of sorts, exactly the kind of feeling that sends you looking for a snack.

Hungry, Cold, Or Bored?

Next time a craving hits hard, run through it:

  • Am I actually cold?
  • Am I just bored inside?
  • Have I had a proper meal recently, or am I running on empty?

More often than not, it's one of these, not true hunger. And the good news is, you don't need to fight it, just answer it better:

  • Craving something warm? Swap toast or a hot chocolate for a warm, high-protein option like our Creamy Tomato or Roast Chicken Soup. Same comfort, no crash an hour later.
  • Craving something sweet? Stir a scoop of your Lady Shake through warm oats instead of having it cold. Chocolate or Coffee flavour works beautifully through porridge, and you still get the protein and fibre to keep you full.
  • Bored and stuck inside? Keep a Lady Bar or Boost snack within reach so boredom doesn't turn into a bigger detour.

Your brain isn't lying to you, it's just working off an old instinct. Now you know what's really going on, you can meet the craving with something that actually works for you.
